Acne Treatment using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Acne is a condition that is often associated with adolescence but can affect people into their 30’s and 40’s too.

For some it is merely an annoyance, but for many acne sufferers the condition can cause long term confidence issues and on-going skin concerns due to acne scarring.

How does the treatment work?

The bacteria that causes acne, Propionibacterium acnes, can be destroyed by the wavelength of Blue light. In addition, the Intense Pulsed Light gently heats up the skin around the spots and this produces collagen which boosts the healing process.

How long does it take?

Each session would take approximately 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

How many treatments will I need?

Often 8 – 12 treatments will be required over a period of 6 week or more. Treatment can be performed up to twice per week initially, being reduced to weekly or monthly intervals as treatment progresses.

What should I expect during and after treatment?

A cool, clear gel is applied to the treatment area. Each pulse of the Light has been described as a ‘tiny rubber band snap’. The footprint of the IPL is about 6cm² so a whole face can usually be covered in 14 – 20 pulses. The gel is removed and further cooling applied. Following treatment the area may be red, but this usually subsides very quickly

Can anyone have this treatment?

Acne treatment is suitable for all skin types. We can only treat clients over 18 years of age. There are some contraindications for all laser/IPL treatments. Click here for more information.
