Chemical Peels and Skin Care
Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels are an ideal option to achieve fresh and rejuvenated skin. They can effectively improve fine lines, pigmentation, texture and open pores. Specific peels can also be used in the treatment of acne.

Chemical peels involve the careful application of a chemical exfoliant to the surface of the skin. Depending on the nature of the condition being treated a peel solution can be chosen to target the prime concerns. At The Rhoda Clinic we use some of the milder peels which we generally term resurfacers.

What types of chemical resurfacers are used?
Light peels: Light or “lunch hour” peels are the mildest of the chemical peels. These peels include Alpha Hydroxy Acids such as glycolic, lactic, and fruit acids. They dissolve only the outer layers of the skin (epidermis) to smooth out fine lines, reduce pigmentation, increase the skins’ hydration and encourage the growth of new skin cells.

The Salicylic Acid resurfacer, a Beta Hydroxy Acid, is particularly effective in the treatment of acne.

Medium depth peels: Trichloroacetic acids (TCA): A TCA solution is used for medium depth peels. This peel is generally used to treat skin with moderate sun damage, surface wrinkles and uneven texture.

How long does it take?
The solutions themselves are left on the skin for a maximum of about 10 minutes, depending on the treatment being performed. However, appointment times are usually 30 – 45 minutes to allow for preparation and aftercare.

How many treatments will I need?
Due to the nature of our range of resurfacers a series of treatments works best. The AHA resurfacers require between 3 and 6 treatments at fortnightly intervals. The TCA can be done up to 3 times with at least a month between treatments.

Are Chemical Resurfacers Painful?
During the procedure, most people feel a brief burning sensation. Cooling is available to make the procedure more comfortable if needed. Once the peel solution neutralizes there is no further discomfort.

What should I expect after treatment?
Immediately after the procedure you will be red but this should subside within an hour or so. Over the next couple of days your skin may feel tighter than normal and then may begin to flake. This can continue for up to a week. Your usual skin care routine can continue as normal.
Following a TCA peel you should go straight home and stay indoors for the rest of the day. Sun protection is vital following any form of chemical peel as exposure to sunlight can cause complications including burning and excess pigmentation.

How much does the procedure cost?
A single AHA resurfacer is £75. A course of 3 is £200. A course consisting of up to 3 TCA peels costs £350.
