Laser and Intense Pulsed Light - General

Laser’s (Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) and IPL’s (Intense Pulsed Light) follow the same basic principles for treating skin conditions.

Some wavelengths of light are absorbed well by certain parts of our skin; the primary ones being water, melanin and haemoglobin.

Lasers emit coherent energy at a specific wavelength in a single beam of light. IPL is broadband light energy that enables large areas to be treated with a single discharge. This short wavelength visible light is passed through filters to enable it to be tailored to specific treatments. IPL, although not a laser, is ideal for the treatment of superficial skin lesions. Because of the way IPL is delivered large areas can be treated quickly. It should be noted however, that IPL devices are, as a rule, less effective at a given task than a laser dedicated to that purpose.

What treatments can be done with Laser or IPL?

Can anyone have Laser/IPL treatments?

No. There are certain contraindications that apply to all types of Laser and IPL treatments. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Tanned skin (either from the sun, sun beds or fake tanning creams)
  • Any inflammatory skin condition eg eczema or active Herpes Simplex
  • Skin cancer or anyone undertaking any cancer drug therapy.
  • A history of keloid scarring
  • Use St John’s Wort within the last 3 months.
  • Use of Isotretinoin (Roaccutatne or Tretinoin) within the last 6 months.
  • Pregnancy or breast feeding
  • Use of photosensitising drugs

What should I avoid after Laser/IPL treatments?

Aftercare instructions will be provided, however, the same instructions generally apply after all Laser/IPL treatments:

  • Avoid sun exposure (including sun-beds) for at least a month after treatment.
  • Avoid very hot baths, showers, sauna’s etc for 48 – 72 hours.
  • Don’t pick or scratch the area and leave any skin responses alone. These are temporary and will subside.
  • Avoid rough sports for 24 – 48 hours.
  • Keep well hydrated by drinking lots of water.
  • Wear SPF 30+ everyday.
